What kind of job would a man have in 1904 Bristol, England that would make him rich?
Hi. I’m writing a novel where a character of mine is living in 1904 Bristol, England. This man is very wealthy with personal drivers, a large home, servants, a live in nanny…that sort of thing. I was thinking of having him live in the country far from the busyness of town as he hates socializing with the poor.

My problem is that I live in America, so most of my research has been done over the internet & in my local library, but I haven’t found any information as to what was a lucrative business ownership or job in the early 20th century England. I was thinking that he could be from a family that has owned industrial businesses for awhile, which would have made the family rich during the industrial revolution, but is there anything else that would be more lucrative than that?

I’d also thought of making him somehow related to royalty, but my research would be too massive (in my opinion) if I made him of royal blood. His career is of little consequence other than the fact that he’s very wealthy from it. Please help me!

And thank you to all from the UK that have been helping me with my other Bristol, England related question!

    Later, Ashley (in Wyoming, USA)
Thank you sarch_uk. I will definitely check those careers out. As for reading the book- I certainly hope you get to read it!

It’s absolutely crazy for me to write a book that is set in England in 1904. I’ve NEVER been to England & I’m so not a history buff, but I just couldn’t lay aside my idea for a novel. I think it’s going to be good, but I am a bit biased too. :-D Thanks again for the help!
Awesome! Thank you, Carina! As you can obviously see- I know so very little about England. I’m doing my homework in researching things, but there is still so much that I just can’t get from books. Thank you!

Well Harveys Bristol Cream is from Bristol so you could have your character as a wine merchant, or even a clothier…

If you take into account the fact that there is a port of Bristol…more so in those days than now… you could have your character as an importer of tea from China, or even someone who owns a shipping line which brings the goods into England.

Sounds as though it’s going to be a good book…do we get a chance to read it!

landed gentry, doesn’t have to be of royal blood, just make up a "Duke of ???" or something, doesn’t have to be a royal title
import-export would be appropriate for Bristol as it was a major port at the time

you wouldn’t necessarily get away from poor people by living in the country … there would be the poor peasants and farm workers in the country to deal with, although if he had a farm manager he needn’t deal with them personally

One acknowledges that today’s life seems to be not cheap, however people need cash for various issues and not every man earns enough cash. Thus to receive quick credit loans and bank loan will be a proper way out.
