@jimboot – Google want you to create a well structured and marked up site and then it sinks or swims depending on what it deserves.
When you go out and start link building and trying to artificially create your signals of usefulness, you’re spamming their index. They don’t want you to do it Jim, what they define as white hat is none of the things that actually generate rankings. If I’m wrong tell me what those white hat signals are that they don’t mind you contriving to acquire?

I take it then that you’re not going for my perspective that the terms ‘black hat’ and ‘white hat’ are just meaningless distinctions between things that Google don’t want you to do?
If Google don’t want us to manipulate their product, the SERP, by artificially creating the circumstances that they favour with good rankings, rather than letting those rankings be earned naturally, why do you think they’d be ok with SEO techniques that you’d describe as ‘white hat’?

Very interesting. We thought that Google would be smarter than this. I got Google to take action once on Google Maps spam. It took a lot of social media action to get their attention and it did in the end…
What I didn’t anticipate was raising the ire of the competitor who though that he was quite within is rights (he wasn’t doing anything illegal). He was like a rabid dog over it, and it led him to do all sorts of stupid and illegal things in retaliation. Interesting…
