First, check out their sample resumes. Do they use templates? They most likely do if all their samples have the exact same format, style, borders, bold, caps, etc. How does that affect you? If they use templates, that means they write resumes using a method that is easiest and quickest for them, regardless of whether it’s in your best interest.

Second, ask them who exactly will be writing your resume. With many larger firms, the person you communicate with isn’t the person writing your resume – that gets contracted out to a freelancer. How does that affect you? If you don’t know who exactly is writing your resume, then you can’t possibly evaluate their qualifications. Many freelance resume writers have a creative writing background and no experience whatsoever in HR or hiring.

It’s important that you are able to assess the qualifications of the person you hire, and see plenty of samples that they themselves have written.
