Search Engine Marketing – Internet Marketing Services – What is the Difference?

Search Engine Marketing is a part of, or form of Internet Marketing Services, and is meant to promote products and services of a company by marketing the company’s website, on the Internet and Search Engines. The marketing and promotion of a website is achieved by raising its visibility and ranking in the result pages of Search Engines. SEM includes utilizing Search Engine Optimization techniques, paid inclusions in Search Engines, and paid placements. The efforts of a SEM strategy are aimed at increasing the traffic and visitors to a website from Search Engine Results. The number of visitors and the conversions thereof are also calculated to get an idea of the effectiveness of the SEM campaign. Conversions are the measure of total visitors to the site and the actual number of visitors who registered on the site, or bought a service or product, or contacted the company for more information.

One of the best-known and widely used Search Engine Marketing methods is PPC or Pay-per-click marketing. It is not only used in Search Engine result pages, but is also used in advertising networks, websites, and blogs, and advertisers only pay for the number of clicks or in short, the number of people clicking on the advertisement. Advertisers bid on keywords or key phrases that are relevant to their target market. When a user types a keyword/phrase in a Search Engines search box, which matches the advertisers keyword or key phrase list, or visits a webpage with content that is relevant to the advertisers keyword/phrase, the advertisements are displayed. These advertisements are known as sponsored advertisements or sponsored links.

Internet Marketing Services is a much broader field and includes Search Engine Marketing. Internet Marketing brings together the creative and the technical aspects of the Internet and includes website design and development, advertising and sales. Internet Marketing Ideas does not mean just building and promoting a website, nor is it just placing banner ads on many websites. Internet Marketing can be effective only if there is a comprehensive long term strategy according to a company’s sales goal, business model, keeping in mind the company’s website, function, and appearance. The focus of Internet Marketing Services is on a target market by selecting proper advertising media, type, and design.

Marketing through the Internet is comparatively inexpensive as to the cost of reaching a target audience. Companies who want to advertise their products and services can reach a wider audience for a fraction of the traditional budgets for advertising. The Internet allows customers and consumers to search for and buy services and products at their convenience. Thus, businesses with an online presence and Internet Marketing Services in place have the advantages of reaching more consumers, which brings better sales and quick results for the money spent on advertising.

Does Your SEO Service Know About Unethical Practices

There are sites that have been temporarily or permanently banned from search engines for practicing of black-hat SEO techniques. As the search engines try their best to provide the most relevant and useful results to the users, the reaction of search engines against malpractices of SEO is easily understandable. The retribution is a constructive step taken by search engines to avoid any irrelevant and manipulated search result. Moreover, the SEO services that claim to achieve top ranking for websites adapt many unethical methods of search engine optimization to make easy money. But, the consequences of hiring such SEO services are always devastating. In a nutshell, the future of your website as well as your online business is at stake if you are not aware of the SEO practices that can lead you to a catastrophe.

Basically, the SEO services are designed to enhance the online visibility of a website that can generate relevant and target traffic. But, there is always a wide gap between optimization and manipulated optimization. Optimization is a natural process of applying SEO techniques for high rankings in search engines, where as manipulated optimization is something considered illegal by search engines and should be better avoided. Basically, manipulating keyword density, Link spamming and duplicate content are the basic forms of SEO malpractices.

Keyword Density

The most considered topic in SEO is keyword. All link building techniques and content development strategies are developed around keywords. Moreover, the search engine results are also based on keywords. Hence, many SEO services go to the extent of over-optimization with keywords to secure high ranking of their clients’ websites. Keyword stuffing is the common and widespread unethical technique of SEO and can result in serious penalties for the websites. Generally, 3-7% keyword density is considered ideal including their use in title of the page, body of the content, headline, subheadings and link texts.

Link Spamming

Assuming the number of links to an essential factor responsible for higher rankings of a website many SEO services go for building links from link farms and other irrelevant sites. Sometimes, the search engines have reported spam even with reciprocal linking. Natural link building is the best option if you want to be in a safe zone in link building. Any kind of link spamming is like inviting penalties from the search engines. It is important to note that for major search engines such as Google, it is the quality of incoming link that adds value to a website.

Duplicate Content

It is the basic SEO rule that content should be unique. Duplicate content means having two pages on the web with same content. Search engines glare at the websites that copy content from other websites. A website having two pages with similar content is also treated as duplicate.

Doorway pages or redirection is another form of SEO manipulation.

Search engines simply don’t like any unethical use of SEO and determine penalties for the websites according to the intensity of the crime. Hence, SEO services should comply with the search engine norms for long-term positive results.

The Facts And Fiction Of Meta Tags

It amazes me sometimes, the amount of outdated and mis-information that can be found on the internet.

One of the best examples would certainly have to be Meta Tags. I still talk to people that are of the firm belief that all they have to do is add the proper META tags to a site and that site will automagically rank for their target terms. Where do they get this information? The internet of course.

With that in mind, I’ve decided to put down the fact and fiction regarding META tags as of 2007.

First, for anyone who is new to the net and unsure of what a META tag is, let me define what exactly META tags are.

META tags, are bits of code that are placed within the tags of a webpage. Their intent was and is, to give information on certain aspects of that page to software programs (such as search engine spiders) without that information being readily visible to the normal visitor.

The two best known (and misunderstood) META tags are the “description” and “keywords” META tags. It is the outdated and false information that is associated with these two tags that is the reason I am writing this article.

Let’s start with the description tag. The META description tag was designed to give robots visiting your page a brief description of what that page is about. It is this description that is often used along with the page title in the SERPs (search engine results pages). So, by adding the META description tag to a page, you are able to (sometimes) control the text used to describe that page in the SERPs.

The question is, does the META description help with the actual ranking of the page. At one point in time, yes, it did. Does it today? NO! Not at ALL.

Ok…now on to the META keywords tag. This particular tag, was originally intended to give robots indexing a page a list of keywords that particular page was about. This was a BIG thing. This tag literally allowed you to TELL the search engines WHAT keywords that page was supposed to rank for. Wow…imagine the possibilities.

Well, MANY people imagined the possibilities and MANY people to FULL advantage of them. So many, that within a matter of just a year or two of it’s initial use, almost none of the top engines even used it anymore. As of today, NONE of the top engines use the keywords tag in any way for ranking purposes.

So…does the keyword tag still have any uses? Nope. The thought was nice, but the greed of many webmasters quickly made this tag obsolete and useless. You will still find many sites using this tag as it doesn’t hurt anything, but it has absolutely no beneficial affect on ranking any longer.

To summarize, neither the META description or keywords tags have any positive affect on rankings. The only one of these two tags that has any use is the keywords tag and that is simply to assist in controlling the description used in the search engine listings.

If you run into someone telling you they will work with your META tags to help your rankings RUN, don’t walk away from them!

See you at the top!
