An Overview | Search Engine Optimization SEO

Many people who are new to internet marketing think that search engine optimization is one solution to insufficient traffic. Search engine optimization – or SEO for short – is actually a package of multiple services that help drive traffic to web sites.

In a nutshell, SEO covers the following aspects: respect for search engines and their rules, design of a web site, various components of internet marketing (pay-per-click ads, promotions, blogs, newsletters, catalogs), article submission (fresh content is imperative), reciprocal links, keyword purchase, and if you’re selling a product or service on a large scale basis, your internet marketing should also have affiliates.

Other services that go under search engine optimization are web site design, payment facilities, e-mail campaigns and advertising banners.

Given these multiple services, you need a company that offers one-stop shopping. About 10 years ago, SEO companies focused on only a few core activities of internet marketing, obliging web site owners and retailers to contact different companies for web site design, advertising, and payment facilities. Today, successful SEO companies are offering complete packages, providing extra services that will make the e-commerce experience of a web site owner smoother and more efficient. In addition to web site design and domain registration, SEO companies also offer copywriting and article submission services; they realize that when surfers are looking to buy a particular product or service, they need to feel that they are buying from a company that knows their product and shares useful, practical information.

Search Engine Optimization: what it’s all about…

Instead of defining search engine optimization in an academic way which is rather limiting, we will mention some elements that constitute good SEO practice:

Using of appropriate keywords in individual web pages

Getting your site listed in the indexes and lists of search engines and directories

Creating web pages that search engines like Google and MSN can read and won’t penalize

Avoid search engine penalties by adhering to guidelines provided by major search engines.

Building pages that will attract more traffic

Monitoring how your web site is doing vs your competitors

Encouraging other web sites to link to your web site

Now someone might argue, “I know what I want to sell and know how to sell it, so why should I even bother about search engine optimization when I have a nice web site and a catalog that people can look at?”

This statement is an accurate reflection of a “newbie” in internet marketing. Just because one has a web site and a product to sell does not mean he will sell that product and start making money.

First he needs customers. Where does he get customers? Sure, his family and friends can help by announcing to their network of contacts that he has a web site. But there are millions of web sites vying for the same traffic. The reason SEO should be our # 1 concern is that we won’t be able to do any effective advertising online if there are no people. Second, search engines are the greatest single source of people – your potential customers.

SEO experts say that 50% of site visits come directly from search engines. Okay, it’s not 100% anymore, because people just type a URL these days or else find websites browsing, but 50% is still a significant number. If you want to grab a share of that 50%, you need to learn search engine optimization – or get a company to do it for you!

Search Engines and Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing is a “Black Hat” technique. Cloaked pages, keyword stuffing and hidden text are just some of the techniques tried by many webmasters which are unapproved methods by search engines. One of the most widely used techniques is what is called keyword stuffing; this is defined by repeating the same word again and again in the Meta tags or main the main body of the site.

Sometimes SEO experts go too far in their desire to push their clients’ sites to top positions and resort to questionable practices, like keyword stuffing. Black hat SEO involves old tricks and some new ones that have become widely used in search engine optimization. If you choose to hire an SEO company that is trying to stuff extra keyword phrases into this tag, I would be concerned about this because in the long run this type of SEO technique will not hold up. SEO is the process of optimizing web pages for keywords and key phrases so that they rank highly in the results returned for search queries. SEO tactics are not always honest this has spawned the negative aspects of SEO. Keyword spamming or stuffing is just the tip of the iceberg.

Some firms use methods called invisible keyword stuffing. What is invisible text? Invisible text is text with the same text color as the background of the pages. There are many ways to make text invisible. One of the ways of using invisible keywords is by making the keywords the same color as the page; if the page is white you make the text white. The text or a link is invisible to the naked eye on a web page, but are seen by spiders. Since the invisible text is read by the search engine crawlers the text or keywords are picked up and indexed. Invisible keyword-rich text in page code is old news to search-engine spiders, they are more advanced and can recognize when a page is using keyword stuffing. The other types of black techniques are content spamming which includes meta tag stuffing and implementing gateway or doorway pages.

Some older content on websites could be considered keyword stuffing due to overuse of the keywords. Yet a website’s content still plays an enormous and fairly direct role in search engine ranking. Add new content or webpage’s daily or weekly to increase a search engine spider’s frequency. Web content keyword optimization is one of the most important step in SEO. Make sure your site is full of unique, high-quality content. Make sure your meta keywords and meta description tags reflect the true meaning of your site and is not simply hidden keyword stuffing. When search engines index the content, the content will be analyzed by the search engine, it could be interpreted as an unapproved technique which will then get your pages de-indexed. Content is the most important part of optimizing your web site for search engines. Try to write the content naturally for the readers rather than the search engines. Good content brings return visitors who may eventually link to your site.

If you are going to promote your website you should stick to white hat SEO methods and recognizing that the black hat SEO tactics which are quick and dirty techniques will not help your business in the long run.

Google Chrome – Changing Face of SEO

The launch of Google’s new browser, Google Chrome, has signaled the start of a change to the search engine optimization (SEO) world. SEO is the process of organically increasing the search engine rankings of a website and, thus, increasing traffic. Since the Internet offers a staggering number of options, a carefully planned online marketing strategy lays the foundation for a successful e-business. Google remains the number one search engine, far outstripping its competitors. Consequently, most SEO firms need to optimize their clients’ sites for the Google rankings.

• Why is Google Chrome different?

Google Chrome is Google Inc.’s new offering, with hopes pinned to challenge the dominance of Internet Explorer. Along with its many features, the Google Chrome also packs the Omnibox – the URL box at the top of each tab. The Omnibox combines the functionalities of both URL box and search box, and blends every move made by Chrome surfer with its search engine. The added search feature is hotly debated by SEO experts across the web. This is due to the heavy influence that Google Suggest seems to have had on the Omnibox.

• How does Google Suggest affect Google Chrome?

Google Suggest is a search suggestive feature that aims at simplifying the users’ search experience by providing users with search suggestions. The Omnibox incorporates elements of the feature by providing a drop down menu that has been the source of much debate. This aspect of Google Chrome is believed to have a significant effect on SEO practices. When a query is typed in, the Omnibox provides two sets of color-coded information; in black are the related search queries and secondly, in green is the number one organic Google search result. Therefore, according to top SEO experts, this has a variety of implications for any SEO company.

• What SEO changes does Google Chrome signal?

With Google Suggest so intricately woven into the browsing fabric, the number one spot is now more valuable than ever. The advertising advantage of appearing before the SERP (search engine results page) is twofold. First, the top ranked site can capture visitors before they even see the SERP and secondly, chances are even higher of click throughs on the first link. Now every SEO company has to prepare itself for a potential phase out of domain name optimization if search based browsing is adopted by other browsers as well. Furthermore, prices of domain names should experience a downturn, but on the other hand, building brand awareness and encouraging numerous brand-related searches will certainly make your brand-relevant queries show up.

Paid Search Advertising Is Not Adequate SEO

A discussion of why investing in paid search advertising is not adequate to SEO a website and why you need to practice other search engine optimization strategies too.

Many businesses both big and small suffer unnecessarily simply because they are under the impression that is enough to simply pay for a listing in a search engine like Google. It is because they think that if they can buy certain keywords or keywords phrases there is no point to searching for them too. However many SEO experts say that paid search advertising is not enough. Just because you paid for it does not mean that this type of promotion will pay for all of your needs.

You also need to manually search engine optimize your site in other ways as well. Paid search advertising may not always cover your entire market. Yet another consideration is that paid search advertising sells the same keywords that you have bought to other webmasters so they are not exclusive to you. So if you are using the same types paid search engine advertising as your competitor, neither of you really have an edge.

If you find yourself in the position of buying search advertising it could also mean that your site was not designed to accommodate your SEO in the first place. When designing a site it is important to conjure up an architecture that comfortably adheres to SEO principles such as user friendliness, avoiding Flash animation, avoiding black hat techniques etc.

The fact is that if you have to spend money on paid search engine advertising, you probably don’t have a site that is search engine optimized in the first place. The entire point of SEO originally was to find techniques that were free that would help raise a site’s rankings in the search engines.
